Armenia occupies an area of 29,8 thousand sq.km and is situated in the northeast of the Armenian Upland, between the Caucasus and Asia Minor. The state capital is Yerevan. In the north and east it borders on Georgia and Azerbaijan, in the west and south , on Turkey and Iran. The territory of the country lies between 1000 and 2500 m above the sea level. The highest peak is Mount Aragats (4,090 meters), while the lowest point is the gorge of the river Debed (400 meters).
CLIMATE
Armenia is often referred to as a sunny country. Its climate ranges from dry subtropical to cold. The average temperature is +25 C in July and -5 C in January. The mountain peaks are covered with perennial snow, while their slopes are lined by alpine meadows. The best time to visit Armenia is spring and autumn.
POLITICAL SYSTEM
Armenia is a Parliamentary Republic with a presidential form of government. The Constitution of the Republic of Armenia was adopted through a national referendum on July, 1995. The President, guided by the Constitution, regulates the legislative, executive and juridical branches of power to ensure their normal and effective work. The President is also the commander-in-chief of the armed forces and the guarantor of the country's independence, territorial integrity and security. The representatives of numerous international organizations reside in Armenia. It is a member of the United Nations (UN), Organization of Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and Council of Europe.
CURRENCY
The Armenian national currency is the Dram. 10, 25, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 5000, 20000 and 50000 dram notes are used. Foreign exchange is not a problem in Armenia . Foreign currency can be exchanged in banks and currency exchange points throughout the city. There is no limitation on the amount of money exchanged. No commission is charged.
LANGUAGE
The official language is Armenian, a separate branch of the Indo-European family. The Armenian alphabet, created by Mesrop Mashtots in 405 AD, is still in use without undergoing alterations throughout many centuries if its existence. The Russian and English languages are also widely spoken in the country.

TRANSPORT
The Armenia has direct air connection with a number of countries in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and CIS. The flights operate out of the international airport Zvartnots, equipped with the necessary facilities. The following means of public transportation are available in Armenia: bus, trolley bus, streetcar, taxicab, etc. The Yerevan subway operates between 6:30 a.m. and 11:30 p.m. Buses and minivans are the basic means of transport between cities and villages. Car rental is available in Armenia. It is also possible to hire vehicles with drivers.

The country code is 374 + the city code (10 for Yerevan). Outgoing international calls can be made by dialing 00, followed by the country code and the number, or by ordering an operator-assisted call through dialing 107.

RELIGION
Armenia adopted Christianity as the state religion as early as 301 AD, long before the other countries were officially converted. The Armenian Apostolic Church is one of the ancient Christian churches. St. Gregory the Illuminator was proclaimed the first Patriarch and Catholicos of all Armenians in 302 AD.
